Artist Positioning Case Studies

TV, Film, & Advertising

Independent power pop band, Secrets in Stereo, didn’t want to go the traditional route of touring around the country in a van, but knew they were forfeiting income and buzz.   Through the Artist Positioning process, they discovered their music could be perfect for TV and film, and this non-traditional route could not only replace, but exceed any income or buzz created by touring.

The Result – With a unique musical direction and a strategic plan in mind, Sorted Noise and Secrets in Stereo partnered to create 15 tracks.  They targeted specific Music Supervisors, and within 6 months all 15 songs had been licensed.  To date, those tracks have been used over 50 times in TV, film, and advertising.  Placements include Grey’s Anatomy, The Hills, Private Practice, Young and The Restless, and The Real World.

“I would have never thought of going the way of licensing.  But, the Artist Positioning process opened my eyes to it being an easy and obvious move.  Combine the focused strategy with the killer production of Thad and Jason, and Music Supervisors just ate it up.”Josh from Secrets in Stereo

Record Deals

High Flight Society is a pop rock act that has been together for over a decade. They had bounced around a number of indie labels, and it was time to get to the next level. After spending time with the guys and seeing them live, it became clear to us that none of High Flight Society’s past recordings had truly captured the energy of the band’s personalities on stage and off.

The Result – Focusing on production techniques that communicated the energy the band had for their music and updated their sound sonically, Sorted Noise partnered with High Flight Society to create a 4-song EP. Within months after the project was finished, the band had a deal with Warner Brothers Records imprint, Word Records.

“This is the High Flight Society I always knew they could be.” - Otto Price, A&R Word Records – After hearing the EP for the first time

Publishing Deals

Caitlyn Smith is a singer/songwriter from MInnesota, who wanted a publishing deal in Nashville. After meeting and writing with her, it became clear that she had undeniable talent, and an even more undeniable gift to connect with a listener one on one with just her and a guitar. Two problems… One, she was an unknown commodity in a town that is all about “the knowns.” And two, the accepted way of meeting with publishers in Nashville is to leave your guitar at home, and just bring a sampler CD of 3-5 songs. Sometimes, to play it for a room full of people.

The Result – With the goals of standing out and creating buzz, Sorted Noise partnered with Caitlyn on a 3-EP and encouraged her to spotlight her “undeniable’s” when meeting with publishers. She had built an amazingly talented team around her, and they took The Music and The Plan, and executed it to perfection. Instead of bringing the CD in to publishers, she brought her guitar. And instead of meeting with the entire company, she met with one person at a time. Within 3 months, she had gone from an unknown from Minnesota, to the “it girl.” She had over a dozen major publishing deals on the table, and eventually signed with superstar songwriter Brett James’ (Carrie Underwood, The Backstreet Boys, Kenny Chesney, Rascal Flatts) Cornman Publishing.
